Junior Kabbah smiled at me while he potted yet another black to win yet another pool match. We were having a fantastic time at Paddys bar in Aberdeen, west Freetown that evening. 'One day I'll beat you' I promised him. That was in May 2008. I'll never get that chance in this lifetime. For on 12 December 2008, Junior passed away. He was only 37 years old. Rest in peace my friend.
Junior, the son of the former President of Sierra Leone Alhaji Dr Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, loved life, was down to earth and was full of promise. Now his work on earth is complete.
A tragedy like this puts everything into perspective. For example, a man I consider my childhood friend duped me in a diamond deal (conflict free of course)some months ago. I had so much hate for him...not any more. Life is too short to be bitter and negative. I cannot afford to carry the hate in me as it would do me harm. I have forgiven him. Maybe, he was in a desperate situation and needed the money or the diamond. Even if he wasn't, I'm moving on with my life and moving on to the next challenge. I've also learned invaluably from the experience which will stand me in good stead for future business dealings.
I don't know when my work on earth will be done. What I do know is that I'd hate to leave with bitterness and regrets. Therefore, I'm going to make sure that at the start of each day, I forgive (including myself), pray and smile.
So there you have it. The year 2009 is the year when I refuse to focus on negatives, take responsibility for all my actions good and bad and forge straight ahead in my quest to fulfil my destiny.
It's a Happy New Year from me to you - live your life.
